‘Invisible Kingdom #10:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Quick recap: The Sundog crew’s plan almost goes off without a hitch… but almost is enough to get you killed, under the wrong circumstances. In the Hail Mary-iest of Hail Marys, Grix jumps out of the airlock, trusting in her connection to Vess to keep her alive.

“The Edge of Everything” Pt. 5 closes out the second arc of this series in a surprisingly quiet issue. After the climax in the last issue, this feels pretty right. There is a sense of payoff with some of the bubbling tension that’s been building up for a while now. Lame Duck Grix feels like she has nothing left to lose, and the whole crew is going for broke for their survival.

G. Willow Wilson closes out the second arc in great style. The simmering tension between Grix and Vess finally comes to a head, and the moment is handled beautifully. The end sets up an interesting, new direction for the Sundog crew. Christian Ward’s artwork continues to be awesome. The way he illustrates the connection between Grix and Vess is just beautiful. That full-page spread is absolutely stunning!

Wilson et al keep showing us that #StoriesMatter. Representation in sci-fi is often pretty rote and generic, but that’s not the case with Invisible Kingdom. The world is made more beautiful by the diversity that is represented here. Even though the issues explored here are not entirely new to the sci-fi universe, they feel fresh coming from Wilson and Company, and that’s in no small part due to the diverse faces in the story.
