‘John Buscema’s Marvel Heroes: Artist’s Edition’ – Advance Hardcover Review

IDW has provided fans of comic book art some wonderful gifts over the past few years. Books of original illustrated stories by legends Jack Kirby, John Romita, Gil Kane, and others have allowed the general audience a backstage pass of how the original, hand-drawn stories appeared before production. This collection has now been expanded by another inspirational creator.

John Buscema’s Marvel Heroes: Artist’s Edition is the latest book in IDW’s effort to bring raw artwork by a world-class talent to a mass audience for a low price. This book includes work from 1968 to 1989 – the classic Marvel era to the “Image” era. It features complete stories from Avengers, Sub-Mariner, and Thor, as well as paneled pages from The Fantastic Four, Captain America, and Wolverine. There are double-page spreads, covers, model sheets, and pin-ups. Buscema’s work is inked by other legendary artists, among them Dave Cockrum, Joe Sinnott, and Tom Palmer.  Besides being in its original black-and-white form, there are patches and white-outs which show additions, as well as mistakes. It is both fascinating and a joy to look at.

John Buscema’s Marvel Heroes: Artist’s Edition is fantastic. This and the other collections that IDW has produced are nothing short of amazing. Truly, this is a must-have for anyone who studies and loves the art of comics.
