‘The Dead Lucky #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

What happens when soldiers of war return home, only to find that they no longer fit in? This is a question that every generation must answer, with no easy solution. Image Comics’ The Dead Lucky tackles this subject head-on in a unique and surprising way.

Bibiana Lopez-Yang is a former Army captain living in an alternate reality San Francisco. Protector robots patrol the streets while human police officers do their bidding. Bibiana is haunted by nightmares, reasoned to be a reaction to her military service. In addition, she feels out of place in the city that she grew up in. Neither friends nor therapists are able to help her as she tries to fit in again.  Her repeated dreams show her as a being of power – a human incarnation of death. The question is: Are these only dreams, or are they premonitions?

The Dead Lucky is written by Melissa Flores and illustrated by team French Carlomagno and Mattia Iacono.  It is absolutely fantastic. The story is complex and asks some really tough questions, while the art is clear and crisp. This is a brilliant beginning of what looks to be a unique series.

Highly Recommended – 4 out of 4 stars
