‘Clodagh #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

When I reviewed Clodagh #2 earlier this year, I found it difficult to describe effectively, even though I really enjoyed it. Now in issue #3 (which will soon launch on Kickstarter), I’m finding the same problem. It’s a really compelling comic with engaging characters, but when I try to write out why, it doesn’t seem to do it justice.

Here are the basics of what you need to know so far. Fillin, with the help of a talking dog, is journeying to find his daughter Aine who was kidnapped by an evil witch. Clodagh, with the help of a minister with a kind heart and a mysterious past (a bit of a female Shepherd Book), is journeying to catch up to Fillin and help him get Aine back. Meanwhile, Aine, with the help of no one, is trying to escape the evil witch. She hasn’t been successful, but she’s still clearly a lot smarter and more capable than your typical “damsel in distress.” Go, Aine!

All of them encounter various dangers and pitfalls, particularly since the evil witch has an entire army of monsters at her disposal. Still, they know they’ll make it to her safely, and that Aine will be, if not unharmed, at least alive, when they get there, because she’s just the bait to bring Fillin to the witch - which means they also know that, once they arrive, they’re walking straight into a trap.

A lot more happens in the comic than just this, but it’s much more effective if you just read it for yourself. It’s a journey that’s better experienced than just described. I’m really invested in these characters and their journeys and can’t wait to see what they do next. The artwork is gorgeous, too, and really helps bring to life the dangerous and fantastical world that our heroes find themselves in.

If you’re a fan of horror/fantasy comics, epic journeys, grotesque monsters, and worlds with just a touch of Irish flavor, you’ll definitely want to check out the Clodagh series.
