‘Metal Society #5:’ Comic Book Review

In this last issue of Metal Society, we finally get to the main event: the fight.

Though WOL-421313 resents being coerced into fighting, he still agrees.  Rosa insists the match go on despite objections from the council. Armed with the knowledge of how to defeat WOL-421313, she and Abe truly believe she has a chance to show the robots that humans are superior to them. In the first round, the crowd of robots and humans are astounded at Rosa’s success, but WOL-421313 and his team have a few tricks of their own. The battle is fierce as both combatants use all of their abilities to defeat one another; this contest is not just about who is the better fighter, but who is the superior race.

The fight sequences are terrific. Each twist, turn, and punch these characters throw at each other leaps off the page. The intensity is visceral, as each decision Rosa and WOL-421313 make raises the stakes for themselves, the robots, and the humans. The robots, however, never recognize the irony of how mimicking humans has led to this outcome. One has to ask: Why did the robots think that emotion was necessary?  Why was there a desire to prove themselves superior to a species they wiped out? What led them to design a social structure that resembled a human society they so clearly loathed?  I think that if these questions had been addressed, it would have added depth to the overall storyline.  WOL-421313 came the closest to any type of introspection, but that was quickly quashed.

Overall, the series is interesting and enjoyable with terrific art and lettering. As for the ending, all I can say is that it is moving and a bit unexpected.
