‘Specs #3:’ Comic Book Review

Issue #3 explores the fallout of Kenny’s wish in an attempt to help Ted. Of course, in a warped version of wish fulfillment, the wish resulted in Ted being arrested as a suspect for the disappearance of Skunk.

The script by David M. Booher takes us on a wild trip, and I mean this in the positive. Picking up right where we left off, Kenny is guilt-ridden and it’s becoming increasingly obvious that racial tensions mean that the court of popular opinion is not on Ted’s side. In a desperate move, Kenny discovers the horrifying secret of the magic glasses.

Chris Shehan’s artwork surprised me in this issue. While the first two issues were pretty grounded in reality and I loved the naturalness that Shehan’s artwork had, the pages where Kenny learns the truth about the glasses are trippy and horrifying as heck. Roman Stevens’ colors adapt seamlessly from the dark, moody palette of the real world to showing us the spectral world through Kenny’s eyes as he views everything through the glasses. The use of red tones is highly effective here. As always, Jim Campbell’s lettering hits all the right notes. The distinctively different styles he uses to separate Kenny’s internal narration and speech works nicely.

Final thoughts: With things reaching the boiling point, things look really bad for our two friends. While they have the magical glasses to make wishes with, we’ve seen how unpredictable the wish fulfillment can be, so that seems like playing with fire.
