‘Mass Effect: Discovery #2’ – Advance Comic Book Review

Despite some of the recent disappointing developments in the world of Mass Effect: Andromeda, the comic book tie-in series, Mass Effect: Discovery, continues to go well. When we last left things, Tiran Kandros was well on his way to discovering the truth behind the Andromeda Initiative, the massive undertaking that will lead the many races of the Milky Way to the far reaches of space – to find a new home, a new life, and a new beginning. Despite the wonder that such an adventure can inspire, Kandros is under the belief that there’s something more nefarious at play here, and he’s been tasked with finding that out.

This mission has taken him to the planet Novarra, where the rumor of a Quarian scientist who is believed to be the source of some of the leaps in the Andromeda Initiative originated is located. Kandros and his partner Luna Shanks are tracking down the scientist, despite all of the obstacles in their way.

John Dombrow and Jeremy Barlow are a great pairing, and so far, this has been a fun look at the world of Mass Effect before Andromeda took place. With what we learned of Tiran during the course of Andromeda, combined with what we get to know of him here, it has brought some depth to the world, and especially to this character. I love this world more than most franchises, and so far, this team has done nothing but improve the lore of this universe and all its inhabitants.

Gabriel Guzman and Michael Atiyeh are stellar in this series, as well. I love the way the world is built, and Guzman and Atiyeh have really nailed the look of these very different species. There are some major action scenes in this series, as well, and they look gorgeous. That goes especially for some of the scenes where there’s a ton of action. With the use of biotics (an ability that allows those who can wield incredible abilities that stem from a mental and physical power), the action pops in a way that has really only been captured in the video games before.

These kinds of titles can be short-lived, but are usually pretty great. Mass Effect: Discovery’s creative team is really bringing this universe to life in a unique way.
