‘Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade #4’ – Advance Comic Book Review

So… did you see it?

No, not Black Panther.  Everyone has seen that!

I’m talking, of course, about the latest Tomb Raider movie!  I loved it!  Did you love it?

Between this latest film and even a teaser about a new Tomb Raider video game coming out later this year, it’s been weeks since I last thought about Dark Horse Comics’ Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade.  Trinity is back to planning and plotting to find a legendary artifact, but where there’s an evil organization, there’s only one heroine that can stop them: Lara Croft!  Ms. Croft is back, baby, and she’s better than ever!  2018 will be her year in all mediums such as film, video games, and even comic books!

Back in February’s issue of Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade, Lara lives a “normal life” to research clues left by her father about Saint Christopher’s Cross, which supposedly reveals the exact location of God.  She’s also looking for “The Cardinal,” the man apparently responsible for killing her father many years ago.  Lara’s research eventually leads her to the secret Monastery of Akhenaten, and, of course, Trinity is not far behind on her trail…

Naturally, Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade #4 picks up where its predecessor last left off, but this issue is told from the vantage of Trinity and its pursuit in trying to stop Lara from raiding her latest find.  But as “fans of fate,” we know Ms. Croft is always prepared for the unpredictable. “There’s a way out,” as she reminds us. “Always a way out.”

Of the past four issues in this series, I must say that this one was—by far—my absolute favorite!  I found the story so much more compelling as told through the eyes of a Trinity soldier, reporting to The Cardinal as to why their mission failed.  They underestimated the Tomb Raider, even though they knew not to.

Kudos again to script writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly for yet another captivating issue. And with line art by Ashley A. Woods and colors by Michael Atiyeh, we’ve had nothing but consistency since the first issue.  Consistency is hard to achieve for a team that works so quickly—month to month—but this team pulls it off as easily as leaves in fall.

Now, it appears Lara will be back in a new series, Inferno, and it appears as though her tomb raiding will take her all the way to…ANTARCTICA!

Until then,
#LaraCroftIsMyHero
