‘Firefly #24:’ Advance Comic Book Review

With a plan set in motion, the whole crew gears up for some Big Damn Hero-ing while trying not to kill millions while they’re at it. If they succeed, they would take down all of the robo-cops wearing Mal’s face. If they fail… well, there are so many ways for things to go belly-up, ain’t there?

Issue #24 serves a dual purpose: It’s a cap off to a year-long arc, and it’s the prelude to the big ending. Possible romance heats up in some areas while passions begin to cool in others. Farewells are said and outlaws take back their sky. So, it’s basically the end-ish of a really good Firefly story. Speaking of which, we know that we’re headed towards an end of an era of sorts. Starting next year, Greg Pak launches us into the post-Serenity future. Before we do that, I would be kind of remiss not to take a moment to reflect on Pak’s 2-year tenure as the creative mind behind the series. I’ll be honest and state that when I started this series, I wasn’t thrilled about going back into the past, because I thought it wouldn’t have any real stakes and that it would just be filler. Pak et. al have proven me wrong, time and again, giving us a ‘Verse that seems richer, more insidious, and with more moral nuances. In short, they’ve shown us why #StoriesMatter because, often, it’s not so much the outcome but also the details that enrich a tale. A ‘Verse this big needs stories to fill it.

Lalit Kumar Sharma and Daniel Bayliss split art duties once again, and although it’s clearly evident where those splits happen, their distinctive styles seem to transition well, owing in no small part to the consistency of Marcelo Costa’s excellent colorwork and Jim Campbell’s solid lettering. This is a solid crew, and it’s company that Mal would be proud to keep.

Overall, this is a fast-paced issue that sort of wraps up a year-long story of Mal playing sheriff. From the look of things, their stand against the Blue Sun Corp. is not over yet.
