What more can be said: This is a story that matters. This is a story that, on many levels, echoes what America has faced for the last few decades with the accelerated deaths of our children due to gun violence and the antithetical stance that most of our government takes. The series never says this directly, and it doesn’t need to. The fact that the kid who inadvertently brought these monsters to life was also a part of helping to destroy them should give us pause. It should make us consider, what are we not doing that could be helping to stop this? It’s a bigger, deeper issue than just "murder is bad." These are issues that need to be dealt with at the core of our society. Is this the type of normal we’ll be okay returning to when the pandemic is over, these ongoing horror stories? I hope not.
Because of these themes, this final issue isn’t as concerned with the big battle as much as it is the aftermath and where these characters go next. I love the creators for focusing what little time they have to tell a story within a comic book on these story elements, because by bringing things to a nice tidy ending, they only show us how much more complex it will continue to be.
This is a fight that may never be over. We have to win one battle at a time.
