‘Scout’s Honor #3:’ Comic Book Review

“You think the Badlands are fair, boy?!  You forget yourself, Dez — Remember Hancock’s Fourth Law!”
“Y-yes, sir… ‘A Scout always obeys his scoutmaster without question.’”
“Good.  Then accept my judgment.  See Kit as motivation, not a threat.  Besides… I thought you two were like brother, were you not?”
“… Some things change, Father… Not all friendships last forever…:

After Kit’s devastating loss last issue, she’s faced with an even more harrowing task: to survive the Trials of the Eagle and access the hidden tech in the Eagle’s Nest to repair Webelo and get the answers she seeks.

But standing in her way?  A series of tests, all conspiring to stop her from reaching this goal, drawn from the worst elements the Badlands have to offer, from mutated insects, to the debris of the past, to her own deteriorating friendship with Dez,.

But the most harrowing test she’ll have to confront?  The doubts that haunt her own mind.

Scout’s Honor #3 is another fast-paced entry in this excellent series, with just enough breathing room to prepare you for Kit’s next hurdle, both in and out of the trials.  And these hurdles aren’t minor league. Like everything else in the Badlands, these are life-and-death challenges, designed to ferret out a candidate’s greatest weakness.  Which brings us to the greatest dilemma that Kit has to face.

What do you do when everything you’ve been raised to believe… may be a lie?

Because the Trials of the Eagle aren’t just a test.  In writer/creator David Pepose’s talented words and artist Luca Casalanguida’s evocatively cinematic artwork, they’re a bridge between two different worlds for everyone who undergoes them.  With each page, they highlight the distance between those two worlds, raising the stakes and lengthening the shadows of the secrets that each character carries with each passing moment.  And as tense and unyielding as these first three issues are, you get the feeling that this dynamic pair is just lighting the fuse for the explosion that will change this damaged world.

“It wasn’t enough for you to just let me die, was it, little girl?  No. You defile Doctor Hancock’s memory with your shameless blasphemy!  So, give up and die, you miserable disappointment — It’s what you deserve.”

VERDICT: FIVE Angry Suicide Hornets out of FIVE
