‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer #26:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy and the Scoobies dove into a portal after Willow, only to find themselves in a very different universe (They have shrimp!), albeit retro world. While they make it back okay, it would seem that some issues linger longer than a trans-dimensional jaunt can fix.

We’re back in the BOOM!-verse, but having peered through the looking glass has some lasting consequences, whether physical or emotional. While some people have lingering questions about the world they glimpsed, others have more pressing concerns about having crossed over. This issue mostly feels like it’s setting up new conflicts resulting from the trans-dimensional jaunt.

While Issue #25 seemed to be a nostalgic jaunt of sorts, Issue #26 makes it a point to discuss some of the lessons learned from the interdimensional jump while also bringing certain familiar plot points into the fold. Jeremy Lambert’s script feels like a vast improvement over most of the last year’s issues in that it keeps things brisk where they need to be, and we actually get quite a bit of plot moving here. Fans of Season 3 of the show will probably see some elements here that should get them excited. A fan-favorite character makes a comeback, albeit in a pretty small role for now.

Marianna Ignazzi steps into art duties for this issue, and her artwork is a pretty nice mix of character likenesses and a sketchy fluidity. Raúl Angulo’s colorwork is beautiful as ever, and certain color details definitely help maintain consistency in character design. Ed Dukeshire’s letterwork is impeccable as per yoosh, with the usual sense of storytelling that I’ve come to expect from him.

Overall, with Anya’s plans tabled for now, the Scoobies seem kind of set in a holding position. Meanwhile, new players are emerging, probably with some major repercussions for the gang.
