‘The House of Lost Horizons: A Sarah Jewell Mystery #3’ - Advance Comic Book Review

With three mysterious deaths on their hands, Sarah and Miss La Fleur each have their favorite suspects: Sarah believes Mr. Huang is hiding something, and Miss La Fleur is convinced Dr. Caliban is the most likely suspect. It seems Mr. Huang was extremely interested in bidding on a Chinese scroll with supernatural properties at the auction; however, Miss La Fleur had interrupted Dr. Caliban while he was in the middle of some sort of ritual.

Could one of them be the murderer? And what about those intense and violent dreams everyone is having? Could they be a clue?

This a totally fun “who-done-it.” Everyone appears innocent (or not), and there’s lots of room for misinterpretation of motives.  I am relieved to see that Sarah has finally taken measures to protect herself from the unknown murderer. Marie Teresa and Dr. Caliban’s dialogue has gotten a tad redundant as she keeps catching him doing something suspicious, and he keeps telling her to mind her own business. Each time, it’s something different, but he’s doing something so obviously suspect that I wonder if he’s a cop or an investigator of some sort. And everyone is great at deflecting questions.

What I would have liked to see by now is more of the supernatural aspect. We get a few hints, a possible spell or two, the shared terrifying dream, but nothing else.  I’d love to see what some of these artifacts Lillian’s husband was planning to auction off can do. So far, all of them have been pretty much locked away.

This issue moves along briskly, and we also get a bit more action in. I have my hunch who the killer is, so it’ll be interesting to see if I’m right.  Stay tuned.
