‘Scout’s Honor:’ Trade Paperback Review

In a post-apocalyptic world, who would be best equipped for survival? When the world has turned to a barren wasteland, deadly monsters roam the countryside, heavily armed gangs attack innocent people, and everyone has to fight tooth and nail just to find enough food to feed themselves and their families, what group of people have the necessary skills, bravery, and determination to survive and to help others survive? If you said, “The Boy Scouts,” then you’re already on board with the premise of this comic.

It’s a couple of hundred years after the world was devastated by nuclear bombs. Society was destroyed. The new society has been built on the principles of the Ranger Scouts—a somewhat twisted version of the Boy Scouts that train their members in how to use tools and weapons, how to survive in extreme conditions, and how to live with honor, courage, and dignity. They also teach their members to kill their enemies without hesitation, and that any of their brethren who are weak or fall behind should be left to die.

In the current crop of Ranger Scouts being trained, two stand out above all the rest: Dez, the son of the Scoutmaster, and Kit, whose skills as a warrior are unmatched. Best friends, the two are both in training to ascend to the highest Ranger Scout position of all: the elite Eagle’s Guard.

However, Kit also has a secret. In this world where only boys are considered worthy to learn the ways of the Ranger Scouts, Kit is actually a girl. If Dez or anyone else were to find out, she’d be killed.

Kit’s isn’t the only secret either. A number of secrets are uncovered over the course of the comic which shake the Ranger Scout principles of honor, loyalty, and dignity to their core. And Kit is the only one who can set things right.

Having been a Boy Scout myself when I was a pre-teen and teenager, it’s interesting to see those principles reflected here in these “Ranger Scouts” and how they’ve evolved after hundreds of years in a post-apocalyptic hellscape. I like to think that the troop I belonged to wouldn’t have succumbed to the darker, more sinister aspects of the Ranger Scouts. In truth, though, very few of us probably would have has the survival skills to last very long in that world to begin with.

The story is a compelling one which keeps things exciting throughout. There are a number of twists and turns in the plot that keep you on your toes and help you stay invested. If you’re into post-apocalyptic action stories, you’d do well to check out Scout’s Honor.
